Wynn Hotel Exterior (high res)

Sin City

Every now and then when your life gets complicated and the weasels start closing in, the only cure is to load up on heinous chemicals and then drive like a bastard from Hollywood to Las Vegas ... with the music at top volume and at least a pint of ether. -- Hunter S. Thompson

We started the day in Flagstaff, and ended up in fabulous Las Vegas. It was not a long drive, only 250 miles, and we did get to stop at one of my favorite places, Hoover Dam.

Las Vegas is always changing. About five years ago the "family destination" idea was dumped, leaving several hotel/casinos with a problem, what to do with all those kid-friendly attractions.

Take the Luxor. Ten or fifteen years ago, the Luxor's black pyramid design, "inclinator" (sideways elevators) and unique room furnishings, were the height of Las Vegas architecture. And it had a second floor that was designed around IMAX films and state of the art games. Today, it's hard to even find the second floor game area. And it is nearly deserted. The video monitors tout the new topless show. And the Luxor just looks old.

The new hot hotel is the Wynn, AKA Janet's hotel (her last name). We stopped in, and it is pretty wonderful (at least what we could see). It's everything Vegas is famous for. And it doesn't look very kid-friendly...

And one last note -- The old Hoover Dam tour has been "Vegas-ized" too. Visitors can't go into the dam anymore. There are blast barricades heading to the dam, and a check-point some miles earlier. The amazing Art-Deco style of the dam simply isn't on public display anymore. The new visitor center is nice. It's just not the Hoover Dam. Damn.

Tomorrow, it's home to California.
